iPhone HD coming on June 22 with 960 x 640 display, Verizon version coming too?

By now, we all know that Apple will launch a new iPhone this summer. But we might be only half right, since new rumors are pointing out that the Cupertino giant is actually preparing to introduce two new iPhones.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “people briefed on the matter” are saying that one of the new iPhones is manufactured by Pegatron Technology (a subsidiary of Asus – which, of course, also makes smartphones of its own) and it will be launched via Verizon sometime after September this year, obviously being a CDMA device.

The other new iPhone (presumably the GSM/HSPA model) will still be made by Hon Hai Precision (aka Foxconn), which manufactured the previous iPhones.

The WSJ article is pretty light on details, but Engadget has it that the GSM iPhone should be called iPhone HD (not iPhone 4G) and it will be announced on June 22. Moreover, Daring Fireball claims that the new iPhone might have a 960 x 640 pixels display, front-facing camera, and multitasking (thanks to iPhone OS 4.0).

Well, with a resolution like that, the screen size can’t be 3.5 inches, like the size of the screen on the older iPhones. I mean, it actually can be, but the pixels would be cramped and I’m not sure how good the user experience would be. So it’s almost safe to assume that Apple’s new iPhone will have a larger screen – maybe around 4 inches (like the screen of Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G, or the one of Samsung Galaxy S).



Back to the iPhone for Verizon, it makes perfect sense for Apple to want its smartphone to be sold via more than just one US carrier – in fact we’ve heard that the iPhone might be soon available via all four major carriers, including Sprint and T-Mobile. And yes, there is a Nexus One-like pattern here.
